Reviews book: From the far reaches of the D'Haran Empire, Bishop Hannis Arc and the ancient Emperor Sulachan lead a vast horde of Shun-Tuk and other depraved "half-people" into the Empire's heart, raising an army of the dead in order to threaten the world of the living. Meanwhile, far from home, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell must defend themselves and their followers from a series of terrifying threats, despite a magical sickness that depletes their strength and which, if not cured, will take their lives...sooner rather than later. "Richard saw the point of a sword blade sticking out from between the man's shoulder blades. He spun back toward Richard after throwing the woman out of the opening, ready to attack. It seemed impossible, but the man looked unaffected by the blade that had impaled him through the chest. It was then, in the weak light from the fire pit off to the side, that Richard got his first good look at the killer. Three knives were buried up to their brass cross-guards in the man's chest. Only the handles were showing. Richard saw, too, the broken end of a sword blade jutting out from the center of the man's chest. The point of that same blade stuck out from the man's back. Richard recognized the knife handles. All three were the style carried by the men of the First File. He looked from those blades that should have killed the big man, up into his face. That was when he realized the true horror of the situation, and the reason for the unbearable stench of death." From Terry Goodkind, author of the Sword of Truth series, comes Severed Souls, a New York Times bestselling novel of Richard Rahl, Kahlan Amnell, and their world. Reviews book: When friends become strangers, anyone can be a killer. It's the perfect time to murder someone. An ice storm has shattered the Adirondacks into a million pieces. There's no power and the roads are impassable. There are no police. Just Hyla and Lizeth. The sisters are trapped with ten neighbors in one house, including Jimmy Lamarche, his secret girlfriend and her jealous husband. So when Jimmy and his teenage son trek into the shattered landscape and don’t return, every finger knows where to point. But there are no bodies and no blood. Only bullet holes in the ice and a strange man in the woods. A man who knows Lizeth. A man who has all the answers…impossible answers. And Lizeth must listen, because if she doesn’t, Jimmy and his son could be lost forever. This book is an Indie Author Project (IAP) Select title. IAP Select features the best indie books as curated by Library Journal, library editorial boards, editors and librarians. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "…even better than the first." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "…will keep you turning the pages long after you should have been in bed." Women’s detective fiction just got a lot more scary. Welcome to the world of The Frontenac Sisters: Supernatural Sleuths & Monster Hunters, a new psychological fiction/metaphysical mystery series that is guaranteed to keep you up at night. Severed Souls is the second installment in a planned series of eight books that combine a good old-fashioned amateur sleuth (two, in fact) with spine-tilling suspense, heart-breaking drama, just enough horror to keep you on the edge of your seat, and the heart-pumping adrenaline rush of a fast-paced thriller. Sleuths and sisters Hyla and Lizeth Frontenac run their own unique private investigator business from a small town in the Adirondacks. But they’re more often in their 1972 Ford Econoline van, driving across America to investigate the next inexplicable crime. They’re not technically professionals. The cases they investigate are more dark and disturbing than the average. More…bizarre. Criminals are cloaked as supernatural monsters, occult forces threaten them at every turn, and the confused victims demand justice. Lucky for the victims, these women sleuths are on the case. For no monster is safe in the path of a determined woman. For readers who enjoy a strong female lead protagonist, this thrilling series of paranormal private investigator mysteries will have you hooked from the first word. From the twisted imagination of mystery, suspense and thriller writer S.H. Livernois.

Reviews book: Since capital punishment was such a hotly debated issue in Europe during the early nineteenth century, and since crime, trials, and executions provided ideal material for the melodrama that characterizes French Romanticism, several authors of the period naturally exploited the death penalty in their works. Severed Heads and Martyred Souls examines the Romantics' obsession with capital punishment, analyzing its literary treatment in texts by Hugo, Lamartine, Eugene Sue, Dumas the elder, Vigny, Balzac, Stendhal, and Nodier. The book explores the effects of death sentences on character and plot development, the language of the texts, and the overt or implicit moral and political messages of each author, and successfully demonstrates that reflecting upon the French Romantics' treatment of capital punishment is both important to understanding the Romantic movement, and instructive for current debate on the issue of capital punishment.

Reviews book: Why were Prometheus and Loki envisioned as chained to rocks? What was the Golden Calf? Why are mirrors believed to carry bad luck? How could anyone think that mortals like Perseus, Beowulf, and St. George actually fought dragons, since dragons don't exist? Strange though they sound, however, these "myths" did not begin as fiction. This absorbing book shows that myths originally transmitted real information about real events and observations, preserving the information sometimes for millennia within nonliterate societies. Geologists' interpretations of how a volcanic cataclysm long ago created Oregon's Crater Lake, for example, is echoed point for point in the local myth of its origin. The Klamath tribe saw it happen and passed down the story--for nearly 8,000 years. We, however, have been literate so long that we've forgotten how myths encode reality. Recent studies of how our brains work, applied to a wide range of data from the Pacific Northwest to ancient Egypt to modern stories reported in newspapers, have helped the Barbers deduce the characteristic principles by which such tales both develop and degrade through time. Myth is in fact a quite reasonable way to convey important messages orally over many generations--although reasoning back to the original events is possible only under rather specific conditions. Our oldest written records date to 5,200 years ago, but we have been speaking and mythmaking for perhaps 100,000. This groundbreaking book points the way to restoring some of that lost history and teaching us about human storytelling.

Reviews book: In this wide-ranging study Marina Scordilis Brownlee investigates the importance of the letter--often a complex interplay of objectivity and subjectivity--in the establishment of novelistic discourse. She shows how Ovid's Heroides explore the discourse of epistolarity in a way that exerted a lasting effect on Italian, French, and Spanish works of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, especially on the fifteenth-century Spanish novela sentimental, or "sentimental romance." Presenting this proto-novelistic form as a highly original rewriting of Ovid, Brownlee demonstrates that its language model interrogates rather than affirms the linguistic referentiality implied by romance. Whereas the ambiguity of the sign had been articulated in fourteenth-century Spain (most notably by the Libro de buen amor), it is the fifteenth-century novela sentimental that fully grasps the existentially, novelistically dire consequences of this ambiguity. And in the process of deconstructing the referentiality that underlies romance, the novela sentimental reveals itself to be a discursively essential step in the evolution of the modern novel.
